Somaliland Frees Poetess following Presidential Pardon

Activist and poetess Naima Ahmed Qorane has been freed from Prison after receiving presidential pardon on Monday.

Qorane was sentenced to a three years jail term by a regional court in the break-away region of Somaliland for allegedly publishing material deemed to  be ‘undermining and bringing the state into contempt’ last month.

Following intervention by elders and Human Rights activists, the president of the breakaway Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi has announced the absolution from the sentence in a statement on Monday.

The release was welcomed by Somaliland Human Rights Centre saying it was fair.

June 2017, the former president of Somaliland, Ahmed Silanyo has pardoned over 50 prisoners in Borame Central prison after many prisoners became ill on Acute Water Diarrhea (AWD)
